Congenital spinal deformities are spinal disorders that develop in the womb. During fetal development, cells do not form correctly, leading to abnormal spinal alignment that can affect the baby’s nerves. A child may develop one or more types of congenital spinal deformities, said Dr Roop Singh, head of the orthopedics department at PGIMS. He was addressing PG doctors on the occasion of the sixth PG Teaching Course which was attended by over 100 participants and concluded here on Sunday.
Dr. Roop Singh said that spinal deformity can be caused by reasons like polio, family history, lack of oxygen at birth, compression of nerves due to some disease, etc. He said that about two dozen such patients are coming to the OPD of Pratibha Department. He said that the symptoms of spinal deformity of the child will vary depending on the type, severity and affected area of their condition. Some congenital abnormalities may be benign and may not cause any deformity in the spinal cord and may not even be detected. Dr. Roop Singh said that congenital spinal deformity can be detected during a physical examination immediately after birth. However, some spinal deformities start appearing in childhood itself. He said that congenital spinal deformity can sometimes be detected in the womb itself. They are often found during a physical ultrasound between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy, although some abnormalities can be caught even earlier.
